Re-union

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

March 30, 1977 is a most significant date in my life.

It is the birth-date of my firstborn son, Rashied Schneidmill.

Rashied is a multi-faceted, multi-talented and immensely unique young man.  During a period in my life when I was a dad in name only, a dad who couldn’t have remotely resembled the meaning of the word “dad” if my life depended on it; Rashied grew, thrived, survived, excelled and became the wonderful young man he is today – a young man anyone (including a once-upon-a-time negligent dad) could be completely proud of.

And I most assuredly am.

Tonight (August 30, 2008), Rashied and I had a telephone conversation that only could’ve been organized, ordained and orchestrated by God.

You see after several years of being incommunicado with each other, God initiated a re-union.  I’m extremely grateful to Him and can now totally and undeniably identify with the lyrics of the Ashford and Simpson classic song, “Re-united”…because it truly “feels so good.”

I’m going to do all I can from this moment on until I’m placed in a box and deposited in the earth to be a better dad to my eldest son – not because of some need for penance or to make up for lost time and squandered opportunities on my part; but because Rashied Schneidmill is flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone, blood of my blood and because I love him immeasurably.

Thank you Son for making our re-union happen.

Please trust me to keep it alive as long as I am alive.

Your dad

Hello Folly

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

The Radio Bible Class’s “Our Daily Bread” publication I wrote about in a submission early this past March, provides a tool to help people read through the Bible in a year.  I’ve been following their normally sequential-reading format for years and have greatly benefitted from it.

This year, however, the folk at RBC have provided a reading format that transcends their norm.  In addition to the recommended daily reading passages (that are somewhat sequential), the program takes you through a chapter of the book of Proverbs each month – Proverbs has 31 chapters so each day of the month I’m cycling through it.

I enjoy Proverbs very much.  Written primarily by King Solomon, it’s a book that can help one become wise and understand the meaning and benefits of wisdom.

One of the ways the book does this is by comparing and contrasting wisdom with foolishness – Proverbs outlines the disadvantages and detriments of folly, fools and foolishness with over 70 references throughout its tome.

Here are several examples for your reading pleasure:

“The simple inherit folly; but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.” (Proverbs 14:18)
“Folly is a joy to him that is destitute of wisdom; but a man of understanding walks uprightly.” (Proverbs 15:21)
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes; but he who heeds counsel is wise.” (Proverbs 12:15)
“A fool vents all his feelings; but a wise man holds them back.” (Proverbs 29:11)
“The tongue of the wise uses knowledge correctly; but the mouth of fools spews out foolishness.” (Proverbs 15:2)

“Where’s he going with this?” you may be asking.

Well, it’s true I could venture out into a myriad of directions with this subject (and one day I may revisit it to do so), but I want link folly with a news broadcast report I heard recently.

This report stated that Americans (particularly Government employees) were going to be asked to stop calling people who commit acts of terror, “Islamic Terrorists” because the people who are committing these acts should not be associated with any one particular religion.

Are you perplexed right now?  Did you think such a request sounded just a mite ridiculous?  If you did, I think we’re okay, but if you didn’t, you might want to spend some time in Proverbs.

An overwhelming majority of terrorism being conducted throughout the world today are being conducted by individuals who call themselves “Islamic Terrorists,” are “Islamic Terrorists,” and proclaim that their acts of terror (i.e., beheadings; bombings (improvised explosive devices known as “IED’s,” suicide or otherwise); hangings; kidnappings; mutilations; rape, and other barbaric acts) are being done in the name of…(wait for it)…“Islam.”

To ask American people to not link fact with reality (primarily for the purpose of not offending some people) is in my strong assessment … (wait once again) …“foolishness.”

For further “wisdom” on this subject, I invite you to read the memoirs of two very brave, intelligent and insightful women who can validate from their personal lives what is or what isn’t an “Islamic Terrorist.”  Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s “Infidel” and Brigitte Gabriel’s “Because They Hate,” give indisputably clear realizations about people who, in the name of “Islam,” want the entire world to pick from two choices – accept and live according to Islam…or die.  The widespread way that choice is being spread is via … (wait one last time) … “terrorism.”

Soooo, you can decide to say “hello” to folly, be “inoffensive” and call a cactus a peach so the truth of its “thorny” disposition and persona isn’t hurt; or you can see and say things for what they really are, because as Proverbs 13:16 says, “Every prudent man acts with knowledge; but a fool displays (speaks and acts upon) folly.”

I Want To Talk About YOU

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Years ago I recall listening to jazz alto-saxophonist, Sonny Stitt, play a melodically memorable rendition of Billy Eckstine’s romantic standard; “I Want To Talk About You.”  There’s also a recording of this song by the amazing jazz legend, John Coltrane – I’ve no doubt that’s great too, but Sonny Stitt’s rendition is the one I remember most and recommend you listen to if you ever have the privilege.

Now, I’ve never heard the lyrics of this song before, but based on its beautiful musicality, I gather it’s an immensely powerful love song.  Additionally, I believe that if you hear it like I’ve heard it while considering its title; you’ll hear a moving expression of love, adoration and devotion sincerely conveyed from one to another.

In this present time, lots of people, issues and things are being “talked” about, but nowhere in the manner or zip code vicinity of what that old standard conveyed.  With that in mind and based on my recent recollection of this composition and its title, I realized that I wanted to talk about someone like the song in a manner reminiscent of the song’s intent.

I want to talk about God.  I want to talk about my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  I want to talk about the Holy Spirit who is the Comforter that lives within me.  I want to talk about the complete fullness and totality of the creator, provider and preserver of all existence – in essence, “I Want To Talk About YOU.”

God,

YOU are amazing, all-powerful, awesome and wonderful.
YOU are incredible, fully-loaded with mercy and great in compassion and goodness.
YOUR wisdom is unparalleled and YOUR power is immeasurable.

I Want To Talk About YOU.

YOU are my sovereign Lord and King, my beginning, middle and end.
YOU are my preserver, protector, provision and peace.
YOU are my source, shelter and sustainer and sufficiency.

I Want To Talk About YOU.

YOUR love for me and all of mankind is limitless and everlasting.
YOU love us the way we were, just as we are and the way we can become and be.
YOUR love surpasses knowledge and YOUR truth reaches to the clouds.

I Want To Talk About YOU.

I thank YOU for YOUR character, YOUR essence and example.
I thank YOU for YOUR unfailing mercy and YOUR love that’s everlasting.
I praise YOU complete holiness, perfect righteousness and undeniable excellence; and I

Just Want To Talk About YOU.
